Introduction

For those who wish to experience local village life off the beaten path, on a Greek island immortalized by Homer as the 'island of the winds', this house on mythical Skyros is for them!

Property Description

Located in the beautiful main village of Skyros, the house sits on a hill overlooking the sea and the mountains. Over a century old, the house has been lovingly renovated in the traditional Skyrian style with its thick stone walls, wooden balconies, and wood-carved details. The house is laid out on two floors, with a private veranda overlooking the sunset and the sea and a wooden balcony looking onto the inner courtyard. It is in a quiet residential neighborhood, yet only two minutes’ walk from the main marketplace with its shops, restaurants, and bars.

Typical of Skyrian architecture, the house, which sleeps up to four people, is built on several levels. The two floors are connected inside by a wooden staircase and outside by stone steps. On the upper floor is an open space comprising a living area with a double bedroom on a mezzanine level. A door opens onto the veranda. On the ground floor are the kitchen, the bathroom, living room/ dining area, and a bedroom with two bunk beds. The house is fully equipped and has WiFi.

Activities

Skyros is well known for its local architecture, ceramics, wood carvings, embroideries, and the Skyros 'pony', actually an ancient, nearly extinct miniature horse. The island produces cheese and honey, and the local gastronomy includes goat dishes, pies, spaghetti with lobster, fresh fish, and vegetables.

There are many beaches to enjoy, including Molos, close to town and the largest sandy beach, combining quiet stretches along with busier, the latter featuring beach bars with umbrellas and deck chairs, and a couple of good tavernas. Further afield are less commercialized beaches such as Kalamitsa, Atsitsa, and Pefkos. Half of the island is dry and rocky, and the other half is covered with a pine forest. There are also many trails for hiking and walking, as well as possibilities for boat excursions and scuba diving available through local providers.

Among the cultural attractions are the castle at the top of Skyros village, Byzantine churches with wallpaintings, an archaeological and ethnographical museum, the Bronze-age site of Palamari, and the grave of the British poet Rupert Brooke, located on Mt. Kohilas.

The house is available for one week May 20-26; June 1-8; or September 2-8.
